Abstract

The combined shipment volume of Taiwanese contract manufacturers reached around 46.46 million units in the second quarter of 2013, declining merely 1% sequentially but up 30.1% year-on-year. Although the second quarter used to be the weak season for mobile phones, several factors facilitated Taiwanese contract manufacturers' second-quarter shipment volume. First, a 20% growth in sales volume of Apple's iPhone series compared to the same period last year to around 31.2 million units. Second, Wistron has begun to feel the breeze from the increased manufacturing orders following its takeover of BlackBerry's R&D staff based in Chicago. Taiwanese contract manufactures' shipment volume was significantly fueled by both ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) orders. Comparing orders received in the second quarter of 2013 to the same period last year, orders from Nokia and Motorola were no longer major sources of revenue for Taiwanese manufacturers. Aside from Apple, manufacturing orders from Sony, BlackBerry and Chinese branded vendors such as Xiaomi, Coolpad, and Huawei constituted a majority share of Taiwanese contract manufacturers' shipment volume.
